Why this Board of Education election matters
In local elections, you have a powerful opportunity to shape the future of our schools and children’s education.
In Cromwell, residents will choose up to five candidates for the Board of Education. The current board consists of six Republicans and three Democrats. Four members still have two years left in their terms, which means there are five open seats in this election. Of those five seats, at least one must be filled by a minority party candidate — either a Democrat or an Unaffiliated candidate. This year, in addition to the two Democratic-endorsed candidates, two Unaffiliated candidates are also running.
This field of candidates is partly due to an alleged internal dispute at the Republican caucus that resulted in the committee declining to endorse the sitting Board of Education chair. With some committee members looking to endorse candidates that they believe will press a more conservative agenda on the Board of Education.
With the balance of the board at stake, it’s more important than ever to get out the vote for the Democratic-endorsed candidates and ensure a more balanced, student-first Board of Education.
Jessica Lamb is a dedicated leader and brings a strong professional background to the school-board role. She currently serves as Senior Director of Materials Planning at a major aerospace manufacturer and has more than 26 years of experience in engineering and supply chain planning. Her analytic approach, attention to process, and long-term career in a complex field give her a unique viewpoint for prioritizing operational effectiveness, accountability, and forward-thinking in our school system.
Donna Mattei brings more than 30 years of hands-on education experience as a teacher, advisor, and community leader. Known for her commitment to student success and high academic standards, she has helped shape school policy, fostered student leadership through the National Honor Society, and coached varsity athletics. Since retiring, Donna has continued to support students and lifelong learning while giving back. A Mount Holyoke graduate and proud Cromwell parent of three CPS alumni, she is running to ensure all students benefit from strong schools, responsible governance, and a community that works together to prepare future citizens.
