Statement of the Cromwell Democratic Town Committee Executive Board on the Treasonous Acts of Sedition Committed at the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021
We are deeply saddened by the events that occurred at the United States Capitol on January 6th. The great American experiment with democracy, which has long been known as a shining city on a hill, has been tarnished in a way that we have not seen in our lifetimes. It marks an incredible low point in American history, exceeded only by the actions of rebellious states in the United States Civil War, that the President of the United States chose to direct his followers to attack the Congress as it proceeded with its constitutional duties. When Donald Trump told his followers to “…walk down Pennsylvania Ave,” there can be no doubt he was aware that he was setting up another Oklahoma City-style terrorist act. The fact that he proclaimed that he would march with his followers and failed to do so highlights his cowardice but does not diminish his culpability.
While this is a time when we must attempt to reconcile diverse philosophies on American government, this is not a time to ignore or minimize criminal acts by domestic terrorists attempting to destroy the internal mechanisms of the American government. While it is a time for those of good character to try and come together, it is not a time for those who believe in the rule of law to cower before those who do not.
We must also grapple with the enduring legacies of disenfranchisement and unequal access to all aspects of government highlighted by this horrific event and the inconsistent police response. The failed defense of the Capitol highlights the ability of the police to exercise restraint, for better or worse, when confronted by a white mob.
We are also further disheartened by the number of our
Republican colleagues and fellow citizens who are doing their best to redirect
the focus from the horrific acts of the insurrectionist movement and their
leaders. Rather, they would like to talk about whether certain private
companies might not wish to do business with those who incite violence.
Although they should all understand that the First Amendment is designed to
protect American citizens from censorship by the government, they choose to ignore the criminal actions by
numerous public officials on and around January 6th and focus instead on which
publishing houses choose to be in business with which United States Senators
and which technology companies allow which politicians to spread their insidious
lies on their companies’ private platforms. In any case, it is well established
law, in this country, that it is not anyone's right to shout fire in a crowded
theater, and it is likewise no one's right to incite violence in the name of
lies. As noted historian Timothy Snyder has said in his book On Tyranny, “To abandon facts is to abandon freedom.” Those whose first
priority is to misdirect the conversation surrounding the efforts to topple the
government to the treatment of those inciting violence by their fellow private
citizens rather than to those same persons’ attempts to topple the government
cannot cast themselves as defenders of American freedom.
We call for the immediate removal of Donald J. Trump
from the Presidency of the United States by any possible legal means. Those who participated in the January 6, 2021
insurrection against the United States government must also be prosecuted to
the fullest extent of the law.
The Democratic Party of Cromwell believes experience, wisdom and mature relationships with the private and public interests in our town are essential to making the tough decisions facing our town. Our candidates not only bring all these qualities to the tasks at hand, they pledge to work together civilly and respectfully to bring value for our citizens tax dollars.
